Prior to founding Whitman, Yap owned an independent estate planning consulting firm. He was also a management and training consultant in one of the leading local conglomerates for many years.

Today, he is an authority and expert in holistic wealth management. A prolific writer, Yap was a columnist for NST, The Edge-Personal, and Sin Chew Daily.

He currently hosts a regular column in The Star Bizweek. In addition, his comments and views are widely sought by various other media like Oriental Daily, Investor Digest, Smart Investor, Personal Money, Bloomberg, Shang Hai and Malaysia Business.

Yap lives with his wife, two sons and two daughters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In his leisure time, he enjoys reading, watching movies and travelling.
