Licensed Financial Planners: What Do They Do, Really?

“Financial advice” has never been more accessible.
And yet, for many Malaysians, it has also never been more confusing.

Recently, BFM 89.9 – The Business Station invited Whitman Independent Advisors Founder Yap Ming Hui onto Ringgit & Sense to discuss an increasingly important question:

How does the public distinguish between genuine licensed financial planning and the growing number of “wealth coaches”, “investment consultants”, “finfluencers”, and self-proclaimed financial experts online?

The conversation was not merely about titles or licenses.
It was about trust.

Because after nearly two decades in the profession, one issue remains clear: many Malaysians still do not fully understand what proper financial planning is, what a licensed financial planner is meant to do, and why it matters long before retirement itself.

It also led to an interesting reflection on the future of the profession.

Perhaps the industry should spend less time asking people to become “financial advisors” — a label that has become increasingly broad, blurred, and misunderstood — and spend more time building professionals committed to solving one of Malaysia’s most important long-term issues:

Retirement preparedness.

Because this profession, at its best, is not about products or transactions.
It is about helping people make better long-term decisions, preserve dignity in retirement, and build financial resilience across increasingly longer lifespans.
