The Value of Choosing Whitman
At Whitman, we are unwavering in our commitment to deliver a comprehensive and tailored approach that accurately assesses each client’s financial situation
In 2000, at the age of 30, Yap Ming Hui founded Whitman — four years before the Securities Commission established regulations for the financial planning profession.
At that time, the financial services industry was driven by product sales. Malaysians received plenty of advice, but it was often biased and fragmented. Yap saw how this fragmented system left families confused, financially vulnerable, and without a clear long-term plan.
He believed there had to be a better way- one that integrated every part of a person’s financial life into a single, cohesive plan. When holistic financial planning was eventually introduced, it marked the shift the industry had long needed. For the first time, people were empowered to make the right financial decisions and choose products based on their unique circumstances, goals and dreams.
That vision became the cornerstone of Whitman’s mission: to help Malaysians prepare for a confident and comfortable retirement.

But the market resisted – it wasn’t ready. Few Malaysians saw the value in paying professional fees for truly independent financial advice.
For years, Whitman was seen as unconventional—too bold to fit in, too early to be understood. It was a period marked by hardship; some of the founding partners and early planners lost faith and left. Yet through the challenges, Yap remained resolute.
Driven by conviction and supported by his wife, he travelled to the United States to study how the world’s wealthiest families preserved and grew their wealth through established family office practices.
He returned to Malaysia with new insights and strengthened determination to build a model that truly served families, and better serve Whitman’s clients.

After years of perseverance, it began to pay off. A key turning point was realising his initial approach was too conceptual. By focusing on the precise needs oh high net worth individuals and the localising the insights and best practices he gathered from renowned family offices in the United States, he discovered a viable business model. This success allowed Whitman to grow its clientele tremendously.
Then, in 2008, a pivotal encounter changed everything.
Yap met a single mother who urgently needed proper guidance but had no access to independent advice. Her situation revealed a deeper, systemic gap within the financial landscape and sparked Whitman’s expansion into the mass-affluent segment.
As Whitman grew and served more families, Yap uncovered a deeper, more widespread issue. Many middle-class Malaysians were unknowingly losing between RM1.5–2.5 million over their lifetime- losses that could mean the difference between an uncertain and a comfortable retirement.

This alarming discovery became the catalyst for Whitman’s boldest transformation in 2019.
Whitman democratised its proven retirement solutions, once accessible only to the wealthy, and made them structured, accessible, and affordable for the middle class and mass market. This move not only changed the lives of countless Malaysians, but also marked Whitman’s evolution from a boutique advisory practise into a trusted firm helping Malaysian families plan and retire with confidence.
The journey reached a historic milestone in 2026, when Whitman became the first financial planning company to be listed on Bursa Malaysia- a milestone that reflected not only its resilience, but also its leadership in shaping the future of retirement in Malaysia.
Today, Yap Ming Hui is recognised as one of Malaysia’s leading voices in retirement planning — committed to helping Malaysians avoid unnecessary losses, optimise their financial future, and retire richer and worry-free
